In short: Before the modern era of high-flying dunks, one man dominated the court with a relentless offensive output. Known as the "Basket Machine," Giorgos Kolokithas became a legendary figure whose scoring prowess earned him a place among FIBA's 50 Greatest Players.

Born in 1945, Giorgos Kolokithas established himself as one of the most prolific scorers in European basketball. Playing primarily for Panathinaikos and Sporting, he became a cornerstone of Greek sports. His nickname, "Basket Machine," reflected his consistent ability to produce points, evidenced by him being named the Greek League Top Scorer in three different seasons: 1964, 1966, and 1967.

Kolokithas's peak years were marked by extraordinary individual accolades. He was the top scorer at two separate FIBA EuroBasket tournaments (1967 and 1969). In 1967, he averaged a staggering 25.4 points per game, while in 1968, he led the scoring in the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament with an average of 22.8 points per game. His domestic dominance was equally impressive; he scored 3,529 total points in the Greek League, including a single-game record of 51 points during the 1966–67 season.

Beyond individual stats, Kolokithas was a vital team leader for both club and country. He helped Panathinaikos secure four Greek League championships between 1967 and 1972 and reached the semifinals of major European competitions like the FIBA European Cup Winners' Cup and the Champions' Cup (now EuroLeague). For his national team, he earned 90 caps, scoring a total of 1,807 points. He retired from professional club play at age 28 due to a severe knee injury but continued to influence the sport as President of all Greek national teams.

His legacy is cemented by his inclusion in FIBA's 50 Greatest Players list in 1991. After retiring from the court, he transitioned into leadership roles within the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK), ensuring that his impact on the game extended far beyond his final buzzer.
