The rare coach who mastered high school, college, CFL, and NFL levels
In short: From sleeping on a cot in a stadium to leading the Green Bay Packers, Mike Sherman’s journey is a testament to persistence. He is one of the few football figures to have served as a head coach across four distinct levels of the sport.
Mike Sherman's rise through the ranks of football was anything but glamorous. After playing defensive end and offensive tackle at Central Connecticut State University, where he was noted more for his commitment than his talent, he began his coaching journey in the late 1970s. His early years included roles as an English teacher and assistant coach at Stamford High School and Worcester Academy. By the early 1980s, he was a graduate assistant at the University of Pittsburgh, where financial constraints were so severe that he slept on a cot inside Pitt Stadium.
Sherman eventually reached the pinnacle of the sport as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2000 to 2005. During this tenure, he achieved five consecutive winning seasons and secured three divisional titles between 2002 and 2004. His success in Green Bay was marked by a high winning percentage of .663, a figure that ranks second only to the legendary Vince Lombardi in Packers history. He also served as the team's general manager starting in 2001, drafting key players like Nick Barnett and Scott Wells.
His versatility is evidenced by his ability to adapt to different environments and coaching philosophies. Beyond the NFL, Sherman led the Texas A&M Aggies as head coach from 2008 to 2011, where he transitioned the team to a pro-style offense. He also took the helm of the Montreal Alouettes in the CFL in 2017. This breadth of experience—spanning high school, college, the Canadian Football League, and the NFL—places him in a remarkably small group of coaching professionals.
