In short: In Rize, football is inseparable from the landscape. From its origins in post-war neighborhood clubs to its current professional status, the club's identity is deeply rooted in the region's geography, transitioning from citrus-inspired colors to a crest defined by a single, vital tea leaf.

The foundations of professional football in Rize were laid long before the modern club emerged. In the aftermath of World War I, local youths established Rize İdman Yurdu, the city's first organized sports club. This was followed by Şark İdman Ocağı, which began activities on 25 June 1923. These early clubs, which even held musical branches, established a local rivalry that set the stage for a more formal sporting structure.

Çaykur Rizespor was officially founded on 19 May 1953, coinciding with the 34th anniversary of Independence Day. The founding committee, led by president Yaşar Dömekçioğlu, originally chose green and yellow to represent the region's tea and citrus farming. However, a pivotal reorganization occurred in 1968. A merger between Rizespor, Fener Gençlik, and Güneşspor transformed the club into a professional entity, leading to the adoption of green and blue—colors symbolizing the lush hills and the Black Sea.

The club's identity underwent its most significant shift on 9 February 1991, when it merged with the state-owned tea company, Çaykur. This partnership gave the club its current name, Çaykur Rizespor Kulübü, and integrated the tea leaf as the central element of its crest. Today, the club competes in the Süper Lig, playing its home matches at the Rize City Stadium, a facility designed with a hybrid grass system to withstand the region's heavy rainfall.
