From Chicago high school standout to NBA star and multi-million dollar contract
In short: Ayo Dosunmu's journey is defined by rapid ascent and high-stakes milestones. From breaking IHSA championship scoring records as a high school senior to earning consensus All-American honors at Illinois, his path has led him through the Chicago Bulls and into a massive $112 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
A Chicago native with a Nigerian father and African American mother, Dosunmu bears a name signifying 'joy' within the Yoruba language, marking a path of great success. His rise began in the Chicago high school circuit, where he transitioned from Westinghouse College Prep to Morgan Park. While playing his final year at Morgan Park, he secured a second straight state title by scoring 28 points, establishing a new IHSA record for points in a final.
His collegiate tenure at the University of Illinois was marked by elite performance and versatility. In his junior season, Dosunmu became a consensus first-team All-American and received the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard. He demonstrated remarkable consistency, recording multiple triple-doubles, including a 21-point, 12-rebound, and 12-assist performance against Wisconsin on February 6, 2021.
The professional stage brought both milestones and setbacks. After being selected 38th overall in the 2021 NBA draft by the Chicago Bulls, he quickly made an impact, notably surpassing Orlando Woolridge's rookie record for consecutive made field goals. Despite injuries, such as a shoulder fracture that ended his 2024–25 season, his talent earned him a lucrative five-year, $112 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves in June 2026.
Dosunmu has also represented his country on the international stage, winning a gold medal with the USA Basketball Men's U18 National Team in 2018. His career highlights a blend of scoring prowess and playmaking ability, evidenced by his ability to lead teams in scoring and record career-highs in points, rebounds, and assists well into his professional career.
