The unique Scottish club born from a merger of two existing league sides
In short: In 1910, Ayr United was formed by merging Ayr Parkhouse and Ayr F.C. While many clubs are born from unions, Ayr United remains the only Scottish Football League club to have been created through the merger of two existing league members.
Founded in 1910, the club has since become a fixture of Scottish football, though its path has been marked by significant shifts in tier. While they have spent 34 seasons in the top division, their most recent stint ended in the 1977–78 season. Since then, they have competed primarily in the second and third tiers, securing six second-tier championships and three third-tier titles, including a notable League One championship in 2017–18.
The club's identity is deeply tied to local culture, earning the nickname 'The Honest Men' from a line in a Robert Burns poem. This connection to heritage extends to their battle for their crest; in 2015, the club faced legal action claiming their shield-and-saltire badge was an unregistered coat of arms. A rapid fan-led petition, gathering 700 signatures in just 24 hours, helped protect the emblem, drawing support from political figures like Ruth Davidson.
Individual achievements at Somerset Park include a staggering single-season scoring record held by Jimmy Smith, who netted 66 goals in 38 league matches during 1927–28. This remains the British record for most league goals in a single season. Meanwhile, Peter Price holds the club's overall scoring record with 213 competitive goals scored between 1955 and 1962. The club's history is also defined by legendary figures like manager Ally MacLeod, who led the team through three spells and eventually managed the Scotland national team.
