From Middlesbrough's rejection to representing Northern Ireland on the world stage
In short: After being released by Middlesbrough in 2013, Bailey Peacock-Farrell had to fight for his place in professional football. His journey from a rejected youth prospect to a seasoned international goalkeeper involves high-stakes penalty saves and a significant decision regarding his national allegiance.
Peacock-Farrell's professional ascent began after Middlesbrough decided not to offer him a scholarship in 2013. He joined Leeds United shortly after, signing his first professional contract in June 2015. His debut came in April 2016 in a match against Queens Park Rangers, where he conceded an 87th-minute penalty during a 1–1 draw. Although a fractured hand sidelined him during late 2016, he ultimately secured the starting goalkeeper role for Leeds throughout the rest of the 2017–18 campaign, winning the club's Young Player of the Year trophy.
His career has been marked by pivotal moments of competition and loyalty. In 2019, he signed for Premier League club Burnley for a reported £2.5 million to compete with Joe Hart and Nick Pope. During his time at Leeds, he faced intense competition from Kiko Casilla, a move that prompted Peacock-Farrell to consider his future. He also faced a significant crossroads regarding his international identity; after being approached by England staff, he chose to represent Northern Ireland, qualifying through his grandfather, Jim Farrell, who was from Enniskillen.
Since then, his career has seen him move through various clubs, including a successful loan at Sheffield Wednesday where he became the first goalkeeper in their history to keep clean sheets in the opening five games of a season. By September 2025, he achieved a significant milestone by becoming only the third goalkeeper, following Pat Jennings and Maik Taylor, to earn fifty caps for the Northern Ireland national team.
