How a diverted river helped build a legendary Spanish football stadium
In short: Before the crowds arrived at Vigo's Balaídos Stadium, local businessmen faced a massive engineering hurdle: they had to reroute the Lagares river. Since its 1928 inauguration, this venue has evolved from a local pitch into a major cultural hub for football and global music icons.
The foundations of the Balaídos Stadium were laid in September 1924, when a group of local businessmen purchased 75,000 m2 of land. The project required significant environmental modification, specifically the diversion of the Lagares river, to prepare the site for construction. Following the formation of the Stadium de Balaídos, S.A. company, the architect Jenaro de la Fuente oversaw the build, leading to the stadium's official inauguration on 30 December 1928.
The inaugural match saw Celta Vigo defeat Real Unión 7–0, with Graciliano scoring the first goal. Since then, the venue has undergone several major transformations. It was renovated for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, which saw the stadium host three group matches. Later, in 2002–03, the stadium faced a crisis when it failed a UEFA inspection required for Celta's Champions League campaign, though local authorities eventually funded the necessary upgrades to keep the club at home.
A massive, four-phase reconstruction project began in early 2015 to modernize the stands. By 2023, the Marcador stand had been completely rebuilt to seat 6,209 spectators. The final stage of this redevelopment, involving the Gol stand, commenced in April 2025 with a target completion date at the end of 2026. Looking further ahead, a planned expansion of the Tribuna stand aims to increase capacity in time for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond football, the stadium has served as a premier concert venue. It has hosted legendary performances, including Madonna in 1990, The Rolling Stones in 1998, and Dire Straits in 1992. Today, the all-seater stadium accommodates 24,870 spectators and remains the home of Celta Vigo.
