In short: In 1999, distributors were too afraid of a tragic ending to screen a new director's debut. Yet, through pure word of mouth, Bala's Sethu bypassed the skeptics to revolutionize the industry, launching the careers of icons like Vikram and Surimma.

Bala's entry into the Tamil film industry began not as a director, but as a production assistant under Balu Mahendra, following an introduction by lyricist Arivumathi. His directorial debut, Sethu, released in 1999, became a landmark moment for the medium. Despite more than 60 distributors hesitating to screen the film due to its disturbing and tragic conclusion, it achieved massive success through word of mouth. The film's impact was so profound that it triggered a 'new wave' of realism and led to several high-profile remakes in Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi.

The director's career is defined by his ability to launch and reshape the identities of leading actors. He provided a breakthrough for Vikram in Sethu and for Suriya in Nandhaa (2001). He later brought both stars together for the 2003 film Pithamagan, a project noted for its emotional climax and complex character sketches. His work often explores the darker, more realistic aspects of the working class, earning him a National Film Award for Best Direction for Naan Kadavul in 2009.

However, Bala's commitment to creative autonomy has also led to significant industry friction. In 2019, a high-profile dispute arose during the production of Varmaa, the Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy. While E4 Entertainment claimed they required a re-shoot due to an unsatisfactory final cut, Bala maintained he resigned to safeguard his creative freedom. Similarly, his project Vanangaan faced major disruptions, including the departure of Suriya and 2D Entertainment in late 2022 due to story changes. While his films like Paradesi (2013) have been praised for their technical and transformative qualities, later projects like Vanangaan (2025) have faced critical backlash for their handling of sensitive subject matter.
