From 1951 regional roots to a cornerstone of Chinese professional football
In short: Beijing Guoan is one of only four clubs never to be relegated from China's top flight since the Super League's 2004 foundation. From its origins as a combined North China squad to its status as a major domestic force, the club's journey reflects the evolution of the nation's sporting landscape.
The club's lineage traces back to 1951, when it emerged from the North China Football Competition. Originally, the team was a composite of the best players from Beijing and Tianjin, a precursor to the modern Jing-Jin derby between Beijing and Tianjin Jinmen Tiger. By 1955, the club had reformed as Beijing Football Club, eventually securing back-to-back league titles in 1957 and 1958.
A pivotal shift occurred on 29 December 1992, when the club was recognized as a fully professional entity during China's football reform. This professional era saw the club adopt green colors and compete in the first professional top-tier league starting in 1994. Under manager Jin Zhiyang, the club secured its first professional trophy by winning the 1996 Chinese FA Cup with a 4–1 victory over Jinan Taishan Jiangjun.
The club's financial and competitive profile has seen significant shifts. In 2015, Forbes valued the team at US$167 million, with an estimated revenue of US$30 million. Ownership has also transitioned; while originally established by CITIC Guoan and the Beijing Municipal Sports Committee, the Sinobo Group became the sole shareholder (100%) following a capital increase that began in late 2016.
On the pitch, Beijing maintains a fierce rivalry with Shanghai Shenhua, known as the Jing-Hu derby. This rivalry reflects the tension between China's political capital and its financial center. One of the most notable moments in this rivalry occurred on 20 July 1997, when Beijing defeated Shenhua 9–1 at the Workers' Stadium, marking the club's largest victory and Shenhua's greatest defeat.
