The Maryland politician who never lost an election in 58 years
In short: From the Maryland House of Delegates to the U.S. Senate, Ben Cardin’s political career spanned over five decades. Known for his liberal focus on environmental protection and social services, he maintained an unbroken winning streak from his first election in 1966 until his retirement in 2025.
Born in Baltimore on October 5, 1943, Ben Cardin entered politics while still in law school, winning a seat in the Maryland House of Delegates in 1966. He eventually rose to become the 103rd Speaker of the House, becoming the youngest Speaker in Maryland history at age 35. His legislative focus during this era included reforms to property taxes, school financing, and ethical standards for officials.
In 1986, Cardin transitioned to federal politics, winning the seat in the U._S. House of Representatives vacated by Barbara Mikulski. Over ten terms in the House, he championed social services, specifically child welfare, medical benefits for children, and tax credits for childcare. His fiscal legacy includes 2001 legislation to increase 401k and IRA contribution limits, as well as expanding Medicare to include preventive screenings.
Cardin’s Senate career, which began in 2007, was marked by significant foreign policy and environmental work. Alongside Senator John McCain, he co-authored the Magnitsky Acts to penalize foreign officials for human rights abuses and corruption. He also advocated for the Chesapeake Bay and clean water regulations. After announcing his retirement in 2024, his tenure concluded on January 3, 2025.
