From Pennsylvania record-breaker to NFL depth and XFL star
In short: Before entering the NFL, Ben DiNucci was rewriting Pennsylvania high school history. After a standout collegiate career, he transitioned from a seventh-round draft pick to a standout performer in the XFL, proving his resilience through the volatile landscape of professional football rosters.
Ben DiNucci's ascent began at Pine-Richland High School in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania. In his final year, he set a state record by accumulating 4,269 passing yards, making him the first athlete in Pennsylvania history to exceed 4,000 yards during one season. He tallied 46 touchdowns against just 9 interceptions, guiding his squad to a 15–1 record and a spot in the state AAAA championship game. During his senior year, he earned the Gatorade Player of the Year award for the state. He also received second-team USA TODAY All-American honours.
After playing for the Pittsburgh Panthers, DiNucci transferred to James Madison University. His tenure with the Dukes was marked by significant production; as a senior, he started all 16 games, passing for 3,441 yards and 29 touchdowns while maintaining a nearly 71% completion rate. This success led to his selection by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft, where he was the 231st overall pick. During his time at Pittsburgh, he served as a backup behind Nathan Peterman. He even saw action in the 2016 Pinstripe Bowl.
DiNucci's professional journey has been defined by movement across various leagues and rosters. In the XFL, he was a standout for the Seattle Sea Dragons in 2023, leading them to the playoffs with a 7–3 record and leading the league in passing yards (2,671), attempts (374), and completions (272). Since his NFL debut in October 2020, he has had stints with the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, and Atlanta Falcons, eventually moving into color commentary for CBS Sports. He has also spent time on various practice squads, including stints with the Broncos and Saints. His professional path has included time with the Buffalo Bills as well.
