The tight end who mastered the Wonderlic test
In short: Before he was a Super Bowl champion, Benjamin Watson was a standout sprinter and a cognitive standout. While most NFL prospects focus solely on physical drills, Watson’s elite performance on the Wonderlic test suggested a level of intelligence that tied him for the third highest score in league history.
Born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1980, Watson’s path to the NFL was defined by both physical versatility and academic rigor. Having clocked 22.37 seconds for 200 metres and 50.03 seconds for 400 metres, the former elite sprinter offered a distinct speed profile at tight end.
Watson’s professional career began with a significant draft pedigree. Despite being projected as a second-round pick by many experts, the New England Patriots selected him with the 32nd overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft. His rookie year was marked by immediate success and early adversity, as he won Super Bowl XXXIX with the Patriots despite being placed on injured reserve for much of the season due to a knee injury.
Throughout his tenure with the Patriots, Watson became a reliable target for Tom Brady, notably recording a season-high 107 receiving yards and two touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns in 2007. His career also included stints with the Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints. In 2010, he signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Browns, where he led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and tied for the most receiving touchdowns.
Beyond the statistics, Watson's career is noted for moments of high defensive impact, such as his 'forgotten' play in 2006, where he ran the length of the football field to prevent a touchdown against the Denver Broncos. His journey from a finance major at the University of Georgia to a multi-team NFL veteran highlights a career built on both physical grit and mental acuity.
