A cartoon mascot became a literal deity of ink and terror
In short: In 1963, an animator returned to his old studio only to find it transformed into a nightmare. The Ink Machine—a device meant to bring cartoons to life—had instead birthed a physical manifestation of the studio's mascot: an entity that consumed both employees and reality alike.
The narrative of Bendy and the Ink Machine centers on Henry Stein, a retired animator who returns to Joey Drew Studios. He discovers that his former partner, Joey Drew, created the 'Ink Machine' with the ambitious goal of generating real-life versions of their cartoon characters. However, this technology resulted in a catastrophic failure: the studio was flooded with ink and inhabited by hostile, ink-based entities, including the titular Ink Demon.
The game utilizes a first-person survival horror mechanic where players navigate these corrupted levels to solve puzzles and engage in melee combat using items like axes or pipes. A key narrative device is the use of audio logs—a system inspired by BioShock—which allow players to piece together the tragic fate of the staff. For instance, Henry discovers that characters like Sammy Lawrence (the music director) and Jack Fain (the lyricist) were physically transformed into ink humanoids by the machine's influence.
The story explores a dark cycle of obsession and corruption. Alice Angel is revealed to be Susie Campbell, a voice actress who became so obsessed with her character that she was consumed by the ink. Similarly, Henry is forced to confront the tragic transformation of Boris the Wolf into a vicious monster at the hands of Alice. The game culminates in a desperate escape through an ink-flooded administration office, highlighting the high cost of trying to manufacture life from imagination.
Originally released as an episodic title on Game Jolt in 2017, the game became an 'accidental success' fueled by viral exposure on YouTube and Twitch. It has since expanded into a franchise including a sequel, Bendy and the Dark Revival (2022), and a film adaptation currently in development by Radar Pictures.
