The Dutch-born pitcher who conquered baseball with a backyard curveball
In short: He spent fourteen years waiting for the Hall of Fame, battling critics and injuries along the way. From a backyard mound in California to 3,701 career strikeouts, Bert Blyleven’s journey is a masterclass in persistence, legendary movement, and the art of the prank.
Born Rik Aalbert Blijleven in Zeist, Netherlands, the future Hall of Famer moved to the United States as a young child. His legendary curveball was not the product of elite academies, but of repetitive practice on a backyard mound built by his father, featuring a canvas backdrop over their horseshoe pits. This signature pitch became so devastating that Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson described it as being enough to make a player's knees buckle.
Blyleven's professional career was marked by both immense statistical dominance and significant turbulence. He recorded 3,701 strikeouts—the fifth-most in MLB history—and 60 career shutouts. However, his path was rarely smooth. He famously clashed with Minnesota Twins owner Calvin Griffith over salary, leading to a trade to the Texas Rangers in 1976. He was also known as a notorious dugout prankster, earning the nickname 'Frying Dutchman' for his habit of setting teammates' shoelaces on fire.
Despite his talent, his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame was a long, arduous process. He first became eligible in 1998, receiving only 17.6% of the vote. It took 14 years of waiting, aided significantly by the rise of sabermetric analysis, before he finally reached the 75% threshold. In 2011, he was finally enshrined, becoming the first Dutch-born player to enter the Hall. His career spanned 22 seasons, including stints with the Twins, Rangers, Pirates, Indians, and Angels, leaving an indelible mark on the game.
