The broken jaw that couldn't stop the Glamazon
In short: In 2006, a professional wrestling rising star suffered a devastating injury: her jaw was entirely severed. Yet, instead of retreating, Elizabeth Kociański used the trauma to fuel one of the most dominant eras in women's wrestling history.
Elizabeth Kociański, known to millions as Beth Phoenix, entered the professional wrestling ring with a foundation built on legitimate grit. Before her 2001 debut, she was a standout amateur wrestler, becoming the first female varsity wrestler at her high school and securing the North-East freestyle women's championship in 1999. This athletic pedigree would later define her 'Glamazon' persona in WWE, a character characterized by physical dominance and power.
Her ascent in the WWE was marked by extreme physical hardship. During a May 2006 appearance on the Raw brand, Phoenix suffered a legitimate fractured mandible during a match against Victoria. The injury was so severe that her jaw was entirely severed, requiring extensive surgeries, including the placement of a titanium plate and nine screws. While the injury left a portion of her face permanently numb, it did not end her career; she returned to action via the developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling, within just two' months.
Phoenix's career was defined by breaking barriers and shattering records. She became a three-time WWE Women's Champion and a former Divas Champion, notably holding the Women's Championship for six months starting in October 2007. In January 2010, she made history at the Royal Rumble by becoming only the second woman ever to enter the men's Royal Rumble match. Her legacy is further cemented by her 2017 Hall of Fame induction, where she became the youngest inductee in history at age 36, and her status as the first wrestler to participate in both the men's and women's Royal Rumble matches.
