How a century of Icelandic football survived the harsh northern winters
In short: Founded in 1912, Iceland's premier football league has navigated over a century of evolution. From its origins as the Icelandic Championship to its current status as the Besta deild karla, the competition has survived pandemic disruptions and shifting branding to remain the pinnacle of the nation's sport.
The league, currently governed by the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ), operates under a seasonal schedule dictated by the climate. Due to Iceland's harsh winters, matches are typically played between April and September. This top-tier division currently consists of 12 teams, with the top finishers earning spots in prestigious European competitions like the UEFA Champions League and Europa League.
Historically, the league has been a landscape of shifting identities and regional dominance. While the competition has seen 32 different teams compete in the top division, the power center remains the Capital Region, which holds nearly two-thirds of the nation's population. Only four clubs from outside this region—Keflavík, ÍA, ÍBV, and KA—have ever secured a title. Among these, ÍBV and KA are notable for being the clubs located farthest from the capital.
The league's nomenclature has also undergone significant changes. Previously known as Úrvalsdeild karla, it underwent a period of commercial rebranding. Between 2009 and 2022, the league held naming rights with the Pepsi franchisee Ölgerðin, leading to the popular moniker 'Pepsi Max deildin' from 2019 through 2021. On 24 February 2022, the league was officially rebranded as Besta deild karla.
The competitive history is marked by long-standing dominance and unique anomalies. KR holds the record with 27 titles, while Víkingur most recently repeated as champions in 2026. The league's history also includes unusual circumstances, such as the 2020 season being cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in Valur being awarded the title based on the standings at the time of the stoppage.
