How a Baltimore native became a multimillionaire and a collegiate football icon
In short: Before stepping onto the sidelines of major college programs, Francis 'Biff' Poggi was navigating the high-stakes world of hedge funds. His journey from a Baltimore pharmacist's son to a multimillionaire and a pivotal figure in Michigan football is a story of unexpected pivots and deep personal commitment.
Born on June 6, 1960, in Baltimore's Little Italy, Biff Poggi's career path has been anything but linear. After playing football for the Pitt Panthers and later Duke University, where he graduated in 1985, Poggi initially entered the coaching ranks as an assistant. However, he stepped away from the college game following his mother's cancer diagnosis, choosing instead to enter the financial sector. His collegiate playing days began at the University of Pittsburgh. He later transferred to Duke to complete his degree.
In 1986, Poggi married Amelia Jean 'Amy' Mix and began working as a hedge fund manager with his father-in-law. He founded Samuel James Limited that same year, a venture that eventually made him a multimillionaire. After three decades of success, he chose to relinquish control of the firm to several former players, marking a significant transition back toward his passion for football. His financial firm was established in 1986. He eventually handed the company over to multiple former players.
Poggi's coaching legacy is defined by both championship success and philanthropic devotion. As the head coach at Gilman School from 1996 to 2015, he became the winningest coach in the school's history, securing 13 conference championships. His tenure at Saint Frances Academy from 2017 to 2020 was marked by more than just wins; he personally funded scholarships, tutors, and cooks for the team. This deep connection to the sport and his players eventually led him back to the University of Michigan, where he served in various roles, including interim head coach in 2025 following the firing of Sherrone Moore. He achieved his first NCAA head coaching victory against South Carolina State in 2023. During his time at Michigan, he also served as an associate coach under Jim Harbaugh.
