How a tennis player who never played college football became a major coaching force
In short: Jedd Fisch reached the pinnacle of American football coaching without ever playing the sport at the collegiate or high school level. Instead, he leveraged a degree in criminology and an obsession with coaching strategy to navigate a path from graduate assistant to head coach at the University of Washington.
Born in 1976, Jedd Fisch grew up in New Jersey as a competitive tennis player. His transition to football began during his undergraduate years at the University of Florida, where he was driven by a singular ambition: to work under legendary coach Steve Spurrier. By 1999, he had secured a graduate assistant role, marking the start of a nomadic career that would see him serve on the staffs of over a dozen professional and collegiate teams, including the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, and Seattle Seahawks.
Fisch’s rise is defined by his tactical versatility and willingness to adapt. During his 2008 tenure with the Denver Broncos, he oversaw a breakout season for wide receiver Brandon Marshall, who led the league in targets and finished with 104 receptions. Later, as a senior offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams, he served as a clock-management specialist, contributing to a team that reached Super Bowl LIII. His ability to integrate into diverse coaching environments—from the systems of Bill Belichick to Pete Carroll—eventually paved the way for his transition into head coaching roles.
In 2020, Fisch took the helm at the University of Arizona, a rare appointment for a coach lacking a background as a collegiate player. His impact was immediate; by 2023, he guided the Wildcats to a 10–3 record and an Alamo Bowl victory, securing the program's highest AP Poll finish in twenty-five years. This success led to his 2024 appointment at the University of Washington. Despite the challenges of rebuilding a roster with minimal returning starters, Fisch continues to navigate the complexities of modern college football, balancing high-stakes recruiting with the strategic demands of the Big Ten era.
