How a factory team became a powerhouse known as The Rabbits in Thai football.
In short: Born from internal factory matches, Bangkok Glass Football Club evolved into a professional titan. Now known as BG Pathum United, the club draws its unique nickname from the Chinese zodiac of its first president. Their journey from industrial tournaments to Thai League 1 champions is a masterclass in rapid, structured growth.
The club traces its roots to 1979, when the Bangkok Glass Factory established a team for employees. By 1989, they were competing in local industrial tournaments, eventually formalizing their structure in 1999. The club was officially founded in April 2006, registering with the Football Association of Thailand later that year. A pivotal shift occurred in 2009 when the club acquired the league position and assets of Krung Thai Bank, allowing them to enter the top-flight Thai Premier League.
The club's identity underwent a significant transformation in 2019, when it rebranded as BG Pathum United to better represent Pathum Thani Province. This era saw the team secure the Thai League 2 title and earn promotion. In the 2020–21 season, they achieved their first-ever Thai League 1 title, maintaining an impressive run that saw them lead the table from the seventh day onward. Their success extended to the international stage, marking their first foray into the AFC Champions League Round of 16 in 2021.
Leadership has been a defining, if volatile, element of the club's history. Coaches like Attaphol Buspakom shifted the team's philosophy toward possession-based play, while others like Aurelio Vidmar and Dusit Chalermsan navigated the club through various domestic and continental campaigns. In 2022, the club appointed Makoto Teguramori, their first Asian head coach, as part of a rebuilding project. Despite challenges, including a 2018 relegation, the club has consistently sought to modernize, evidenced by the major renovations of Leo Stadium and a commitment to professional management standards.
