In short: In the haunted mansion of Bhawanigarh, a tragic history of jealousy and black magic created a supernatural deception. While one sister was imprisoned by priests in 2004, her twin successfully stole her life—proving that sometimes the most terrifying ghost is the one living right in front of you.

The narrative of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 centers on a complex web of sibling rivalry and supernatural manipulation. In 2004, two sisters lived in an ancestral mansion: Anjulika and Manjulika. While their father favored Anjulika's talents, Manjulika’s jealousy drove her to seek out black magic. This culminated in a violent night where Manjulika murdered their father and attempted to kill Anjulika. In the ensuing struggle, Anjulika fatally stabbed Manjulika in self-defense, but the tragedy didn't end there.

Through the use of black magic, the spirit of Manjulika manipulated Anjulika into a state where she could steal her own identity. Manjulika then used this disguise to murder eight family members and push Kunwar Thakur off a balcony, paralyzing him. To the outside world, it appeared that Anjulika had died in 2004, while the woman remaining in the house was believed to be the victim. In reality, the 'living' woman was the malevolent Manjulika, who had successfully usurped her sister's life.

The film explores these themes through a modern lens involving Ruhaan Randhawa, a travel vlogger who poses as a psychic named Rooh Baba. The resolution reveals that Anjulika’s spirit eventually intervened to imprison the real Manjulika in the same chamber where she was originally sealed. This reversal highlights the film's core mechanism: a recursive cycle of possession and identity theft where the 'monster' is revealed to be a victim of her own historical crimes.

Produced by T-Series Films and Cine1 Studios, the film faced significant production hurdles, including a prolonged delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, it became a commercial success, grossing ₹266.88 crore (US$28 million) worldwide and becoming the fourth highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022.
