In short: For over six decades, the V90 represented a pinnacle of Swedish automotive design. Its lifecycle, spanning from 2016 through its final build in 2025, chronicles a major industry pivot. This model's evolution reveals how luxury wagons adapted—and ultimately yielded—to the electric future.

The Volvo V90, a mid-size luxury wagon, was initially introduced to the market in 2016, appearing at the Geneva Motor Show just two months after its sibling sedan, the S90. Its production run was extensive, spanning over six decades of station wagon history for the brand. However, this chapter closed definitively in 2025, as Volvo strategically redirected its focus toward electric vehicles and SUVs. The very last V90 rolled off the assembly line in October 2025.

The vehicle's lineup evolved significantly. Early iterations included the V90 Cross Country, a raised, all-wheel-drive variant built for traversing unsealed roads and light off-roading. A notable celebration of this capability occurred on October 30, 2017, when a special Cross Country edition was released for the 2017–18 Volvo Ocean Race, featuring unique orange accents and a detachable flashlight in the trunk. In the US market, sales were limited, totaling 84 units across the 2018 and 2019 models.

Technological shifts dictated major changes. By 2022, the introduction of the mild hybrid V90 aimed to improve fuel economy by replacing the belt-driven supercharger with an electric unit and incorporating a belt-driven Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) unit. This trend accelerated; by 2023, Volvo eliminated conventional engines as an option, making mild hybrids the standard base engine in the US. Furthermore, the powertrain options were generally restricted to engines from the VEA family, including 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units, with the more potent petrol engines utilizing compound charging, as seen in the T8 plug-in hybrid variant.

The model's end-of-life narrative was marked by regional shifts. In the US, sales were discontinued in 2021, marking the final model year for the market. In contrast, the UK saw a return in July 2024, featuring T6 Plus and T8 Ultra trims, exclusively available as plug-in hybrids, replacing the previous Core, Plus, and Ultimate designations.
