From Dutch Immigrant Roots to A-League Dominance: The Evolution of Brisbane Roar FC
In short: Born from a 1957 Dutch migrant club, Brisbane Roar transformed through multiple identities to become an A-League powerhouse. Known for their iconic orange kit and a record-breaking 36-match unbeaten streak, the club has navigated financial instability, ownership shifts, and legendary managerial eras to define Queensland football for two decades.
The origins of Brisbane Roar trace back to 1957, when Dutch immigrants founded Hollandia F.C. in the Brisbane suburb of Richlands. For nearly two decades, the club operated under this ethnic identity until a 1973 Queensland Soccer Federation ruling mandated non-ethnic names for all clubs. This sparked a series of rebrands, including a stint as Brisbane Lions in the 1970s and later Queensland Lions in the 1990s following legal disputes with the Australian rules football club of the same name.
In 2004, the Queensland Lions were selected as the operators for a new Brisbane-based team in the inaugural A-League. The club officially entered the competition as Queensland Roar in 2005. The transition to the name Brisbane Roar occurred in 2009, a move prompted by the entry of other Queensland-based clubs into the league. Throughout this period, the club maintained its Dutch heritage through its signature orange colour, a tradition they reaffirmed for the 2024–25 season to celebrate the A-League's 20th anniversary.
The club's most successful era arrived under manager Ange Postecoglou, who took charge mid-season in 2009. Postecoglou overhauled the squad, implementing an attacking, possession-based philosophy that led to the club's first Premiership and Championship double in 2011. This period included an Australian sporting record 36-match unbeaten run. Despite subsequent periods of instability—including managerial changes, ownership challenges, and fluctuating results—the club has secured three Championships and two Premierships, cementing its status as a cornerstone of the Australian football landscape.
