From Minnesota high school standout to Super Bowl champion
In short: Boye Mafe’s journey to the NFL pinnacle is a masterclass in steady progression. From his roots in Golden Valley, Minnesota, to setting franchise records and securing a championship with the Seattle Seahawks, his career illustrates how consistent production builds toward elite professional success.
Mafe's path began in Minnetonka, Minnesota, where he established himself as an All-Metro standout at Hopkins High School. His high school tenure was marked by significant defensive output, including 78 tackles and four sacks. This foundation led him to the University of Minnesota, where he played for the Golden Gophers. During his collegiate career, Mafe navigated a redshirt freshman year before becoming a key contributor in the Big Ten Conference. In the shortened 2020 season, he earned honorable mention honors by recording 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles across just six games.
The transition to the professional ranks saw him drafted 40th overall in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft—a selection acquired by the Seattle Seahawks via a trade with the Denver Broncos involving Russell Wilson. His rookie year was defined by steady development, culminating in three sacks and 41 total tackles. Mafe hit a major landmark during 2023 by achieving seven sacks across successive matches—a new franchise peak—before concluding that campaign with nine sacks plus two fumble recoveries.
Mafe's career reached its zenith during the 2025 season when he helped lead the Seahawks to a 29–13 victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl LX. This championship win served as the crowning achievement of his professional journey. Following this success, Mafe moved to the Cincinnati Bengals, signing a three-year contract on March 12, 2026, valued at $60 million with $19 million guaranteed. His trajectory from a Minnesota standout to an NFL champion highlights a career built on consistent defensive pressure and strategic growth.
