From community college standout to Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks
In short: DeMarcus Lawrence’s journey through professional football is defined by resilience and high-stakes impact. After rising through the ranks of community college and Boise State, the linebacker became a cornerstone of the Dallas Cowboys' defense before ultimately securing a championship ring with Seattle.
Born on April 28, 1992, DeMarcus Lawrence's path to the NFL was anything but linear. He began his collegiate journey at Butler Community College, where he was an All-America selection in 2011 after leading the team in both sacks and tackles for loss. He later transferred to Boise State University, where his defensive prowess continued to grow, including a standout 2013 season where he recorded 10.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss.
The Dallas Cowboys selected Lawrence in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. Despite early setbacks, including a fractured foot during training camp and a four-game suspension in 2016 for amphetamine use, he established himself as a premier edge rusher. His 2017 breakout season was particularly notable; he recorded 14.5 sacks, earning both NFC Defensive Player of the Week and NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors.
Lawrence's tenure in Dallas was marked by significant financial milestones and physical challenges. In 2019, he became the highest-paid defensive end in the NFL following a five-year, $105 million contract. He also became the first defensive end to have a contract guaranteed for seven straight seasons. After 11 seasons with the Cowboys, Lawrence signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2025. This move proved immediately fruitful, as he helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl LX with a 29–13 victory over the New England Patriots.
