In short: He didn't start as a punter, and he certainly didn't start as a star. Braden Mann's journey from a size-limited linebacker prospect to an NFL champion is a masterclass in finding one's true calling and dominating it.

Braden Mann’s ascent to professional football stardom was not a linear path. In high school at Cy-Fair, he actually aspired to play linebacker, but physical limitations and injuries forced a pivot toward kicking and punting. While he was a highly-rated recruit, his early college years at Texas A&<0xC2><0xA0>M were spent primarily as a kickoff specialist, where he averaged over 62 yards per kickoff during his first two seasons.

The 2018 season changed everything. Following the departure of veteran Shane Tripucka, Mann took over the starting punter role and immediately shattered long-standing benchmarks. During a game against Alabama, he posted a 60.8-yard punting average, eclipsing a record that had stood since 1983. He also delivered an 82-yard punt against Kentucky, the longest for the Aggies since 1944.

His junior season was a statistical anomaly. Mann became a unanimous All-American, earning the Ray Guy Award and breaking the NCAA FBS single-season punting average record with 50.98 yards per punt, surpassing Chad Kessler's 1997 mark of 50.28. He also set the record for the most 60-plus yard punts in a single season, breaking the 2005 mark held by Ryan Plackemeier.

This dominance transitioned to the NFL. Following his sixth-round selection by the New York Jets during the 2020 draft, Mann topped the league's punting totals, accumulating 3,598 yards. His career has since seen him move through the Pittsburgh Steelers and eventually to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he secured a Super Bowl victory against the Kansas City Chiefs.
