From Minnesota records to NFL stardom: the rise of Rashod Bateman
In short: A standout senior season at Tift County High School set the stage for a prolific collegiate career. After breaking records for the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Rashod Bateman entered the NFL as a high-stakes first-round pick, navigating injuries and contract extensions to become a key playmaker for the Baltimore Ravens.
Rashod Bateman's ascent began in Tifton, Georgia, where his dominant senior year at Tift County High School—featuring 83 catches for 1,539 yards and 21 touchdowns—earned him first team All-State honors. This performance led him to the University of Minnesota, where he immediately made an impact. As a true freshman, he established school records with 51 receptions, 704 yards, and six touchdowns. By his sophomore year, he was a semi-finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award and earned the Richter–Howard Receiver of the Year title, recording 1,170 yards and 11 touchdowns.
His professional journey began in the 2021 NFL draft, where the Baltimore Ravens selected him with the 27th overall pick. He became the initial Golden Gopher taken during the opening round since Laurence Maroney back in 2006. His rookie season was marked by early injury setbacks, including groin surgery that placed him on injured reserve on September 1, 2021. However, he returned to record his first NFL touchdown against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16 of that season.
Bateman's career has been defined by both high-level production and resilience against physical setbacks. After a season interrupted by foot surgery in 2022, he achieved a breakout 2024 season, recording career highs of 756 yards and 9 touchdowns. His value to the Ravens was solidified through significant financial commitments, including a three-year, $15 million extension in April 2024, followed by a massive three-year, $36.75 million extension signed on June 5, 2025, which keeps him with the team through 2029.
