From NFL defensive tackle to reality TV runner-up and trial lawyer
In short: Brad Culpepper’s life has been defined by extreme transitions. After a decade in the NFL and a standout collegiate career, he pivoted from professional football to law school, eventually appearing on two seasons of Survivor and becoming a prominent voice regarding player health.
A standout at the University of Florida, Culpepper was a consensus first-team All-American and team captain for the 1991 SEC championship Gators. His scholastic achievements were similarly impressive; he earned a first-team Academic All-American title and the Draddy Trophy, awarded to college football's premier student-athlete. Following his playing days, he earned both a master's degree and a J.D. from the University of Florida in 2001. In 2001, he received induction into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame, earning the 'Gator Great' title. Additionally, he was a first-team All-SEC selection during his senior year.
From 1992 until 2000, Culpepper played professional football for the Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Minnesota Vikings. A tenth-round selection in the 1992 NFL draft, he appeared in 131 games and recorded 34 quarterback sacks. During his career, he reached a weight of 280 pounds, but after retiring, he lost nearly 100 pounds, later expressing concerns that the increasing size of NFL players is unsafe. He was originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings. During his tenure in the league, he started 83 of his 131 appearances.
In the realm of reality television, Culpepper appeared on two seasons of Survivor. He and his wife, Monica, hold the distinction of being the only couple to both be runners-up in separate seasons. While Monica was the runner-up in Survivor: Blood vs. Water, Culpepper reached the Final Three in Survivor: Game Changers, ultimately finishing as the runner-up after receiving three votes in a 7–3–0 vote. He first appeared on the show during Survivor: Blood vs. Water. His performance in Game Changers saw him win five individual immunity challenges.
