From Los Angeles roots to the NFL's high-stakes roster shuffle
In short: Born in Los Angeles, Hroniss Grasu's journey through professional football is a masterclass in persistence. After being drafted in the third round by the Chicago Bears, his career became a whirlwind of signings, releases, and practice squad elevations across the league's most competitive franchises.
Hroniss Grasu's ascent began at Crespi Carmelite High School in Los Angeles, where he established himself as an All-State offensive lineman. His collegiate career at the University of Oregon was defined by dominance at the center position. After taking over as the starter during his freshman year, he became a cornerstone for the Ducks, earning All-Pac-12 Conference First-team honors in 2012, 2013, and 2014. His elite performance also earned him All-American status in both 2013 and 2014, and he was a finalist for the prestigious Rimington Trophy in both of those years.
The 2015 NFL Draft marked a major milestone when the Chicago Bears selected him in the third round with the 71st overall pick. This selection was notable enough to be featured in the season 7 premiere of the FX series The League. His time in Chicago saw him reunited with former college teammate Kyle Long, but his tenure was interrupted when he was placed on injured reserve on August 30, 2016.
The subsequent years of Grasu's career illustrate the volatile nature of professional football rosters. Between 2018 and 2021, he navigated a complex series of transactions involving the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, Tennessee Titans, and San Francisco 49ers. His time with the 49ers included navigating the league's COVID-19 protocols, involving multiple placements on the reserve/COVID-19 list. His resilience saw him move through practice squads and active rosters for the Las Vegas Raiders as recently as 2023, demonstrating the endurance required to remain in the professional ranks.
Beyond the gridiron, Grasu's background is rooted in the immigrant experience. His parents, Ștefan and Mariana Grasu, moved from Romania to Los Angeles in 1982, where they established Greco's New York Pizzeria on Hollywood Boulevard. In March 2024, he married New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu.
