From college quarterback to NFL defensive mastermind
In short: Before leading professional defenses, Brandon Staley was a two-sport star in Ohio. His journey from the University of Dayton's starting quarterback to the helm of NFL coaching staffs is a masterclass in persistence, navigating everything from health battles to the high-stakes pressure of the league's most dramatic comebacks.
Born in Perry, Ohio, in 1982, Brandon Staley’s path to the NFL was paved through the collegiate ranks. A standout athlete at Perry High School, he excelled as both a point guard and a quarterback. He later played for the University of Dayton from 2001 to 2004, where he led the team to a 9–2 record in 2003. His playing career concluded with a season at Mercyhurst College in 2005, where he served as a backup quarterback.
Staley's coaching ascent began in the trenches of graduate assistant roles. Between 2006 and 2008, he worked at Northern Illinois University, eventually moving through various coordinator roles at the collegiate level, including stints at Hutchinson Community College and James Madison University. His breakthrough into the professional sphere arrived in 2017 when he joined the Chicago Bears, followed by a role with the Denver Broncos in 2019 under Vic Fangio.
The pinnacle of his early coaching success came in 2020 as the Los Angeles Rams' defensive coordinator, where his unit ranked first in both yards and points allowed. This momentum led to his appointment as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021. While his tenure included significant moments—such as a 20-16 victory in his debut—it was also marked by intense scrutiny following a Week 18 loss to the Raiders that ended the team's playoff hopes.
Despite the volatility of professional head coaching, Staley has continued to navigate the league's landscape. After being dismissed by the Chargers in December 2020, he held roles with the San Francisco 49ers and was eventually named the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints in February 2025.
