The resilient journey of a basketball journeyman through the world's elite leagues
In short: From a high school phenom in Tennessee to the courts of Turkey and Spain, Braxton Key’s career is a masterclass in persistence. Despite injuries and numerous roster shifts, this former Alabama and Virginia standout has navigated the complex landscape of global professional basketball.
Born Braxton Blackwell, the American professional basketball player underwent a personal name change in 2015. His early career was marked by significant domestic success; playing for Christ Presbyterian Academy, he secured a state title in 2013 and earned consecutive TSSAA Mr. Basketball honors in 2014 and 2015. He later moved to Oak Hill Academy, where he helped lead his team to a 45–1 record and a national championship.
Key's collegiate path saw him transition from the Alabama Crimson Tide to the Virginia Cavaliers. At Alabama, he earned All-SEC Freshman honors, notably scoring 26 points against Georgia. His time at Virginia was highlighted by a national championship victory against Texas Tech in the 2018–19 season, where he contributed 10 rebounds and one block in the title game. However, his progression was frequently interrupted by physical setbacks, including a knee injury during his sophomore year at Alabama and wrist surgery in November 2019.
His professional trajectory has been a whirlwind of contracts across the NBA, G League, and international leagues. After going undrafted in 2020, Key navigated stints with the Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets, and Golden State Warriors. His global footprint includes time with the Vaqueros de Bayamón in Puerto Rico, Valencia in Spain, and most recently, signing a two-year deal with Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Basketbol Süper Ligi in July 2026. This nomadic career reflects the intense competition and constant movement required to sustain a professional basketball career on the world stage.
