From street dancing to scoring historic promotion goals
In short: Before he became a Premier League goalscorer, Brandon Thomas-Asante was a keen street dancer. His journey from the Milton Keynes Dons academy to leading Coventry City's charge for their first-ever top-flight promotion is a masterclass in steady professional progression.
Brandon Thomas-Asante’s career began in the Milton Keynes Dons academy at age 12. He made his professional debut on August 6, 2016, as a 17-year-old substitute against Shrewsbury Town. His early development was marked by rapid recognition; he was named the club's Academy Player of the Year for the 2016–17 season following an impressive first year in the senior ranks.
His path to the top involved navigating the diverse tiers of English football. After loan spells at Sutton United and Oxford City, he joined Salford City, where he secured his first trophy—the 2019–20 EFL Trophy. He eventually moved to West Bromwich Albion in August 2022 for a reported fee of approximately £300,000. There, he quickly made an impact, finishing his debut season as the club's top goalscorer with nine goals and netting a volley against Stoke City voted 'Goal of the Season.'
The pinnacle of his domestic career arrived in 2025 while playing for Coventry City. Under manager Frank Lampard, Thomas-Asante played a pivotal role in the Sky Blues' historic first-ever promotion to the Premier League. He was recognized as the EFL Championship Player of the Month for October 2025 after scoring six goals in just as many matches. Internationally, he debuted for Ghana in June 2024 and represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Thomas-Asante's trajectory highlights the importance of 'journeyman' experience. By moving through National League clubs like Ebbsfleet United before reaching the Championship, he built the physical and tactical resilience required to eventually anchor a promotion-winning side.
