The quarterback whose gambling addiction triggered a high-stakes legal battle in college sports
In short: Brendan Sorsby was a rising star until his betting habits caught up with him. From placing wagers on his own team to facing a massive lawsuit, his journey through Indiana, Cincinnati, and Texas Tech has left the NCAA facing a critical enforcement crisis.
Brendan Sorsby's collegiate career has become a lightning rod for the NCAA's struggle to regulate a high-stakes environment. A talented quarterback from Denton, Texas, Sorsby's trajectory shifted from a three-star recruit at Lake Dallas High School to a central figure in a complex legal and ethical debate. His betting history is extensive: during his single year at Indiana University from 2022 to 2023, he reportedly made 2,900 bets, including 40 on his own team. He originally attended Lake Dallas High School. During his time there, he was recognized as the 2021 Quarterback of the Year by the Denton Record-Chronicle. He also achieved significant success in baseball.
The scope of his gambling expanded as he moved through different programs. While at the University of Cincinnati, he bet on men's basketball. Upon arriving at Texas Tech University, his wagers included professional golf, the NBA, and MLB. In total, Sorsby is estimated to have bet at least $90,000 over a four-year period, sometimes using accounts registered to friends or family members to hide his activity. His betting activity prompted several state regulators to launch investigations. This occurred shortly after he sought treatment for his addiction.
The fallout has been both legal and professional. After checking into rehab for gambling addiction in April, Sorsby faced investigations from multiple state regulators. While the NCAA deemed him ineligible for the upcoming season, a Texas judge granted a temporary injunction on June 8, potentially allowing him to play. This legal tension, combined with a lawsuit from Cincinnati over a $1 million exit fee and a denial from the NFL for the 2026 supplemental draft, highlights the growing pains of modern college athletics. The University of Cincinnati initiated legal action against him in Ohio. They claimed he failed to pay a million-dollar exit fee.
