From rebuilding a struggling program to a $17.5 million contract
In short: Brent Brennan’s coaching career is a study in extreme volatility. After navigating the lows of a 3–22 start and the highs of an undefeated regular season, he secured a massive $17.5 million contract to lead the University of Arizona, proving his ability to rebuild programs under intense pressure.
Brent Brennan’s tenure at San Jose State University (2017–2023) was defined by dramatic fluctuations in performance. His early years were difficult, including a 2018 season with just one win—a figure that tied the program's historical low. However, the 2020 season provided a remarkable turnaround. Despite the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced practices to move to Humboldt State University, the Spartans achieved a 6–0 regular-season record. This run led to their first undisputed conference championship since 1990 and earned Brennan the Mountain West Coach of the Year award.
The path to the top was paved by years of specialized coaching. Before taking the helm at San Jose State, Brennan built a reputation as a wide receivers coach at programs like Oregon State, where he worked with All-American Brandin Cooks. His versatility was evident in his roles as recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator, often managing multiple facets of the offense simultaneously.
In January 2024, Brennan transitioned to the University of Arizona with a five-year, $17.5 million contract. His inaugural season was challenging; the Wildcats finished 4–8, struggling with a roster left behind by predecessor Jedd Fisch. Despite reports of a 'pervasive sense of doom' and speculation regarding a $10.6 million buyout, Brennan successfully overhauled his staff and secured a contract extension through 2030. By 2025, the program showed signs of recovery, finishing the regular season 9–4 and securing a victory over Arizona State.
