In short: Few players transition from a local American academy to the heights of European football with such velocity. Brenden Aaronson’s journey through the Philadelphia Union and Red Bull Salzburg has seen him command multi-million dollar transfer fees and represent the United States on the world stage.

Born in 2000 and raised in Medford, New Jersey, Brenden Aaronson’s professional trajectory began in the Philadelphia Union academy. After a brief stint at Shawnee High School, he moved to the YSC Academy to balance education with elite training. His early professional exposure came in 2017, playing for Bethlehem Steel FC, where he made his first start against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on September 30.

Aaronson’s breakout occurred during the 2019 MLS season. As a homegrown player for the Philadelphia Union, he scored his first professional goal in his debut against Atlanta United. By the end of that rookie year, he was the youngest of five finalists for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award. His 2020 campaign was even more significant, earning him a spot in the MLS Best XI and helping the Union secure the Supporters' Shield.

His ascent continued through major European transfers. In January 2021, he joined Red Bull Salzburg in a deal reported to be up to US$9 million including incentives—notable as the highest transfer fee for an American homegrown player from MLS at that time. In May 2022, Leeds United signed him for a reported £24.7 million. Despite a loan spell at Union Berlin during the 2023–24 season, Aaronson returned to Leeds to help secure the EFL Championship title in May 2025.

On the international stage, Aaronson has been a consistent presence for the United States men's national team. After receiving his first call-up in October 2019, he earned his full debut in a victory over Costa Rica and scored his first international goal against El Salvador in December 2020. He was a key participant in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and was selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
