The undefeated champion of the State of Origin series
In short: Brenko Lee has navigated the highs of an NRL premiership and the lows of a wooden spoon. From his debut with the Canberra Raiders to his international success with Mate Ma'a Tonga, his journey through professional rugby league is a testament to resilience and elite skill.
Born in Brisbane on 10 October 1995, Brenko Lee is a professional rugby league footballer of Tongan and Indigenous Australian descent. His career is defined by versatility, having played as both a centre and a winger across several National Rugby League (NRL) clubs. His professional journey began in earnest with the Canberra Raiders' NYC team between 2013 and 2015, leading to his NRL debut in 2014 against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He attended Marsden State High School in Logan City. Before his professional signing, he played junior rugby league for the Logan Brothers.
Lee's career has seen him represent a wide array of teams, including the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Gold Coast Titans, Melbourne Storm, Brisbane Broncos, and the Dolphins. His time with the Melbourne Storm proved particularly successful; in 2020, he played centre in the NRL Grand Final, securing a 26–20 victory over the Penrith Panthers. This premiership win stands as a major highlight of his career, occurring after he had spent time with the Queensland Cup outfit, the Easts Tigers. His stint with the Gold Coast Titans was difficult, as the club finished last on the ladder in 2019. He also competed in the 2020 NRL Nines held in Perth.
On the international and representative stage, Lee has achieved notable success. He made his international debut for Mate Ma'a Tonga during the 2017 Pacific Rugby League Tests against Fiji Bati. Furthermore, he has represented Queensland in the State of Origin series, a feat marked by a notable distinction: he remains undefeated in the series. His career has also seen him play alongside his cousin, Edrick Lee, most notably during a series-clinching victory for the Queensland Maroons in 2020. He joined the Brisbane Broncos on a two-year contract in May 2021. Most recently, he made his club debut for the Dolphins in their first-ever national competition match.
