The Catalan underdog that rose from financial ruin to the Spanish top flight
In short: Founded in 1903, CE Sabadell FC has survived decades of economic hardship and intense local rivalries. From a historic 1935 Copa del Rey final to a dramatic Japanese takeover, this storied club represents the resilient spirit of the Vallès Occidental region.
CE Sabadell FC, based near Barcelona, has established itself as a significant force in Spanish football history. The club has spent 14 seasons in the Primera División, making it the third most successful Catalan club in the top flight, trailing only FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol. Their golden eras include a long tenure in the top division between 1965 and 1972, and a more recent stint from 1986 to 1988.
The club's journey has not been without significant struggle. After becoming a public limited sports company in 1991, Sabadell faced severe economic problems, leading to relegations into the third and even fourth tiers. This dark period lasted nearly 18 years before they finally returned to the professional divisions in the 2010–11 season, thanks to a successful campaign managed by Lluís Carreras.
Ownership and identity have also shifted over the years. In 2013, the club entered a Japanese era when owners signed an agreement with FC Tokyo, even playing a friendly in Japan. More recently, the club has sought stability through international investors to ensure sustainable success. Despite these shifts, the club's identity remains tied to its roots, symbolized by a crest featuring the Catalan Senyera and the city's onion symbol, and a fierce rivalry with Terrassa FC.
Today, the club operates a prestigious youth academy with over 50 teams, maintaining a presence across multiple levels of Spanish football, from the men's Segunda División to the women's Preferent Catalana.
