In short: SD Eibar defied every logic of modern sports business to reach the pinnacle of Spanish football. As a fan-owned club with a tiny home capacity, they proved that community equity and organizational precision can overcome the massive financial weight of elite leagues.

Founded in 1940 following a merger between Deportivo Gallo and Unión Deportiva Eibarresa, SD Eibar is a professional football club based in the Basque Country. The club's journey to the top flight was marked by significant instability; it even disappeared from official competitions during the 1942–43 season due to the difficulties of the postwar era. It wasn't until 1943–44 that the team reorganized into a full-time unit, eventually establishing itself as a consistent presence in Spain's second tier.

Eibar’s rise is a study in community-driven survival. In 2014, the club faced a financial crisis where it lacked the €2,146,525.95 share capital required to stay in La Liga. To save their status, they launched the 'Defiende al Eibar' campaign, successfully reaching the goal through a seasoned equity offering from shareholders. This fan-owned model now includes about 8,000 shareholders from 48 different countries, highlighting a globalized support system for a local town club.

The club is renowned for its lean operations and unique status as the only football club to hold the UNE-EN-ISO 9001 quality certificate. This commitment to standards helped them navigate their seven consecutive seasons in La Liga (2014–2021). During this era, they were noted for having the smallest stadium capacity of any top-flight team, hosting fans at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium which seats only 8,164 spectators.
