How a century-old Basque club became the ultimate proving ground for future football stars
In short: Founded in 1913, CD Basconia has evolved from a local steel-works team into a vital feeder club for Athletic Bilbao. By operating as a C team, it provides a rigorous environment for teenagers to develop, bridging the gap between youth football and the high-stakes world of professional La Liga competition.
Established on 14 March 1913, CD Basconia takes its name from a local iron and steel-working facility that was later absorbed by the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya company. For decades, the club operated independently, reaching the national third level by 1943 and enjoying a six-season stint in the second tier between 1957 and 1963. However, its modern identity was forged in 1997 when it entered a formal partnership with Athletic Bilbao, effectively becoming the parent club's C team.
This strategic alliance serves a specific developmental purpose: keeping young prospects within a unified tactical system under the close supervision of Athletic Bilbao. Each season, the squad undergoes significant turnover. Typically, about half of the players graduate to Bilbao Athletic or are loaned to other clubs in the Segunda Federación. Their spots are filled by 17 or 18-year-old graduates from the Juvenil A team, supplemented by recruits from regional youth clubs like Danok Bat and Antiguoko. This structure ensures a constant pipeline of talent, with many teenagers using their time at Basconia as a springboard to professional careers in La Liga and UEFA competitions.
While Athletic Bilbao manages the primary squad's coaching and personnel, Basconia maintains its own committee and operates amateur teams, such as Basconia B, which plays at the Soloarte stadium. The club's resilience was tested in January 2018; facing potential relegation, they made the rare decision to sign older, experienced players like Thaylor Lubanzadio. The move proved successful, allowing the team to finish 15th and maintain their divisional status. Today, the partnership remains a cornerstone of the region's football infrastructure, with the agreement renewed in 2020 to extend through 2023, ensuring the club continues its role as a vital nursery for Basque football talent.
