How a small Spanish club conquered the professional football ladder
In short: In 1976, Rayo Majadahonda was just a local team in the Madrid region. Fast forward to 2018, and they achieved the impossible: reaching the Spanish second division. Their journey from regional obscurity to national prominence is a masterclass in persistence and strategic growth.
Founded in 1976, Rayo Majadahonda spent its first decade climbing the regional divisions of Spain. A turning point arrived on June 30, 1987, when new president Enrique Vedia took the helm, overseeing a promotion to the Tercera División. This marked the beginning of their transition from a local neighborhood club to a competitive national entity.
The climb was rarely linear. After securing a spot in the fourth division, the club experienced its first-ever promotion to Segunda División B during the 1996–97 campaign. However, they faced immediate volatility with two consecutive relegations before reclaiming their national status in 2000. It took nearly twenty years of fluctuating between levels before legendary manager Antonio Iriondo led them back into the spotlight.
The pinnacle arrived on May 27, 2018, when a dramatic late own goal by Míchel Zabaco secured promotion to the Segunda División for the first time in history. This success brought unique logistical challenges: because their home ground, Estadio Cerro del Espino, only holds 3,800 seats, they were forced to play home matches at Atlético Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano. To maintain professional status, the club had to restructure as a Sociedad Anónima Deportiva by late 2019, eventually welcoming José María Sanz as president.
The club’s history is also defined by complex scouting and reserve structures. They have navigated various affiliations with other clubs like CDF Tres Cantos and Alcobendas Sport to manage their developmental squads. Today, they remain a symbol of how community-based clubs can navigate the rigorous demands of professional sports through long-term planning.
