The underdog struggle of Les Sao, Chad's resilient national football team
In short: Nicknamed Les Sao, the Chadian national football team has faced a turbulent journey. From early defeats in 1963 to a FIFA ban in 2021 due to government interference, the team has navigated political instability and financial struggles while chasing elusive continental and global glory.
Since their first match in 1963—a 2–1 loss to Liberia—the Chadian national football team has struggled to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations. The Chadian Football Federation, founded in 1962 and affiliated with FIFA and CAF in 1988, has overseen a period marked by both unexpected triumphs and administrative crises. One of the team's most significant achievements occurred in 2014, when they secured the CEMAC Cup title by defeating Congo 3–2 in the final.
The team's history is punctuated by narrow escapes and political tension. In the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, Chad advanced past Tanzania via the away goals rule despite a 2–2 aggregate score. However, the team has also faced severe setbacks. In March 2016, financial difficulties forced a withdrawal from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. More drastically, in April 2021, FIFA imposed an indefinite ban on the team after the Chadian government dissolved the national football federation, a move that also led to disqualification from the 2021 AFCON qualifiers.
Despite these hurdles, the team has shown flashes of brilliance. Under interim coach Moudou Kouta, Les Sao achieved a sensational 1–0 victory over Egypt in the second round of the 2018 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. While they remain a developing force in international football, their journey reflects the complex intersection of sport, finance, and governance in Central Africa.
