In short: Charlie Mulgrew began his professional career at Celtic as a centre back. However, a shortage of players in the left back position forced a tactical change that would define his career, leading him to become one of the most prolific goal-scoring defenders in Scottish football history.

Mulgrew's career is defined by his versatility and remarkable ability to score from dead-ball situations. After progressing through Celtic's youth system alongside Aiden McGeady, he turned professional in July 2002. While originally recruited as a centre back, he was encouraged to switch to left back to address a positional shortage at the club. This transition proved highly successful, particularly during his second spell at Celtic, which began in 2010 under manager Neil Lennon.

His technical proficiency was most evident during the 2011–12 season, a landmark year in which he swept several major accolades. He was named the Scottish Premier League Player of the Year, the PFA Scotland Players' Player of the Year, and the Celtic Player of the Year. During this period, he demonstrated a lethal touch from distance and set pieces, scoring goals from long-range free kicks at Hampden Park and netting a crucial free kick in a 3–0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final.

Beyond his club success, Mulgrew was a mainstay for the Scotland national team, earning 44 international appearances between 2012 and 2019. His international journey included a debut against Slovenia on 29 February 2012 and a period as national captain following the retirement of Scott Brown in 2018. After retiring from playing in September 2023, he transitioned into coaching, serving as an U-18s coach at Hamilton Academical before a brief managerial stint at Kelty Hearts in early 2025.
