From Argentine glory to a record-breaking Brazilian transfer
In short: In just a few short years, Charly Alcaraz has traversed the globe. From scoring decisive goals in Argentina to commanding record-breaking fees in Brazil, the attacking midfielder’s career is a whirlwind of high-stakes transfers and sudden, dramatic shifts in the footballing landscape.
Born on 30 November 2002, Carlos Jonas 'Charly' Alcaraz Durán rose to prominence through the Racing Club academy, which he joined in 2017. His professional breakthrough arrived on 26 January 2020, during a 1–1 draw against Atlético Tucumán. However, it was his performance in the 2022 Trofeo de Campeones Final that truly etched his name into the headlines. Scoring the winning goal in extra-time against Boca Juniors, Alcar<0xC2>taz triggered a massive on-field melee that resulted in multiple red cards, including his own.
His subsequent movement through the European and South American leagues has been remarkably rapid. In January 2023, he moved to the Premier League with Southampton in a deal reported to be £12m, a move that included a 15% sell-on clause for Racing Club. After a stint in England, his career took him to Italy, where he joined Juventus on loan in January 2024. This loan included a significant optional buy-clause of €49.5 million.
The summer of 2024 marked a historic moment in Brazilian football. Alcaraz joined Flamengo in an €18 million transfer, the largest in the club's history, with a contract running until August 2029. Yet, the movement did not cease; by January 2025, Flamengo reached an agreement for him to return to the Premier League, joining Everton on loan. His impact was immediate, providing an assist and a late winning goal against Crystal Palace in February 2025, eventually leading Everton to secure his services on a permanent basis by May 2025.
