The 20% chance that defined a professional footballer's comeback
In short: By age 15, Charly Musonda was already linked to the world's biggest clubs. But his career became a masterclass in resilience rather than immediate stardom. After a devastating knee injury left doctors predicting only a 20% chance of him ever playing again, he spent years fighting to return.
Born in Brussels to Zambian parents, Musonda was a prodigious talent in the Anderlecht youth setup. By 2011, at just 15 years old, his name was already circulating among giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. This early hype culminated in June 2012 when he joined Chelsea alongside his two older brothers, following a compensation fee agreement with Anderlecht.
His path through the elite ranks was marked by high-profile loans and flashes of brilliance. He made a professional debut for Real Betis in February 2016, earning Man of the Match honors against Valencia just days after signing. However, his trajectory hit a severe roadblock during a loan spell at Vitesse in late 2018. Only one week into the move, he suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for nearly two years.
The recovery was grueling. Following surgery in August 2019, medical professionals estimated his chances of returning to professional play at a mere 20%. Despite these odds, Musonda underwent an intensive rehabilitation process, finally returning to team training in late 2020. It took over 1,000 days before he played another professional match, eventually signing with Levante in August 2022.
Musonda's career serves as a poignant study of the physical toll of elite sports. Despite his immense potential and international experience at various youth levels for Belgium, recurring injuries ultimately led to his retirement from professional football on June 30, 2025, at the age of 28.
