From Tucumán to the world: the nomadic journey of Argentine striker Joaquín Correa
In short: Few players navigate the high-stakes transfers of European football as frequently as Joaquín Correa. From the Argentine Primera División to the heights of the Champions League, his career is a map of major clubs, significant transfer fees, and the bittersweet sting of injury.
Born in Juan Bautista Alberdi, Tucumán, the forward known as 'El Tucu' began his professional ascent with Estudiantes. After making his debut in May 2012, he quickly established himself, scoring his first professional goal in May 2014 against San Lorenzo. His talent soon attracted international scouts, leading to a US$10 million move to Italy's Sampdoria in December 2014.
Correa's career is defined by high-profile appearances in Europe's most prestigious competitions. During his time with Sevilla in La Liga, he scored in the UEFA Champions League against Leicester City and found the net at Anfield against Liverpool. However, his tenure in Spain was marked by moments of intensity, including a straight red card following a challenge on Bayern Munich's Javi Martínez in the 2017–18 quarter-finals.
His subsequent move to Lazio in August 2018 brought silverware, including a Coppa Italia victory against Atalanta and a Supercoppa Italiana win. While he has since moved through clubs like Inter Milan, Marseille, and most recently Brazil's Botafogo, his international career with Argentina remains a highlight, including a 2021 Copa America victory. Yet, the 2022 FIFA World Cup remains a missed opportunity, as an injury sustained just five days before the tournament forced him out of Lionel Scaloni's squad.
On the pitch, Correa is a versatile attacker, capable of playing as a deep-lying forward, winger, or centre-forward. Drawing inspiration from the Brazilian playmaker Kaká, he relies on a technical toolkit of ball control, agility, and pace to navigate the world's most demanding leagues.
