The screenwriter who turned 8mm home movies into psychological anime,
In short: Chiaki J. Konaka didn't just write scripts; he built cinematic universes from a childhood obsession with film. From crafting the haunting atmosphere of Serial Experiments Lain to exploring Lovecraftian horror, Konaka’s work bridges the gap between traditional Japanese storytelling and Western-influenced psychological depth.
Born in Tokyo in 1961, Konaka’s creative path was paved by his parents' love for cinema. By age 12, he was experimenting with 8mm films, even adopting the middle initial 'J' to mimic Western names. This foundation allowed him to produce his first film, Invader, in middle school. At Seikei High School, he joined the film club, pivoting toward science-fiction before discovering a fascination with horror through Western classics like The Exorcist.
Konaka's professional career began in special effects before he became a scriptwriter for the 1988 horror film Jaganrei. His work is defined by a dark, psychological tone, often incorporating the Cthulhu Mythos. He served as head writer for major anime properties including The Big O, Hellsing, and Texhnolyze, as well as the live-action drama Ultraman Tiga. He also collaborated with his brother Kazuya on Digimon Tamers, with storylines later reused in Gamera the Brave.
Additionally, Konaka taught screenwriting at The Film School of Tokyo. His recent work includes a stage drama for the 20th anniversary of Digimon Tamers featuring 'cancel culture' and 'political correctness.'
