Why the Chiba Lotte Marines almost became the Dolphins
In short: In 1992, a fan vote promised a new identity for this Japanese baseball dynasty. While 'Dolphins' and 'Pirates' were top contenders, legal hurdles, broadcast conflicts, and a fear of being associated with losing teams forced a different, more heroic path.
The Chiba Lotte Marines have undergone a complex evolution since their 1950 debut as the Mainichi Orions. Originally owned by the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper, the franchise was a founding member of the Pacific League and even secured the inaugural 1950 Japan Series title. However, the team's identity has shifted through several iterations, including the Mainichi Daiei Orions in 1958 and the Tokyo Orions in 1964, before settling into the Lotte era.
The selection of the 'Marines' name was far from certain. During a rebranding effort tied to their move to Chiba Marine Stadium, fans suggested names like 'Dolphins' and 'Pirates.' The 'Dolphins' idea was rejected because the letter 'D' was already claimed by the Dragons in broadcasts, and a defunct team, the Nagoya Golden Dolphins, existed in history. 'Pirates' was discarded due to potential copyright issues with a baseball manga and a desire to avoid a name associated with poor performance, as the team had endured six consecutive losing seasons.
Ultimately, 'Marines' was chosen to represent 'heroes of the sea,' a name that fits their seaside stadium. This identity has been marked by both legendary individual feats and periods of struggle. While the team has seen incredible moments—such as Rōki Sasaki's perfect game in 2022, where he struck out 13 consecutive batters—they have also faced long droughts, including a lack of an MVP winner since 1985. Despite these fluctuations, the club remains a cornerstone of the Pacific League, maintaining a storied, if sometimes nomadic, history.
