The rivalry between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders is considered one of the most contentious in the NFL. Their shared history dates back to 1960, when the teams were founding members of the American Football League. Initially, they competed in the AFL Western Conference, and following the 1970 AFL–NFL merger, they moved together into the AFC West. The Chiefs currently lead the overall series with a record of 77–56–2, including a 2–1 advantage in their three playoff meetings.
Tensions often boiled over into physical altercations, most notably during a 1970 game. After a late-game hit by Raiders defensive end Ben Davidson on Chiefs quarterback Len Dawson, a massive brawl erupted involving wide receiver Otis Taylor. Both players were ejected, and the resulting penalties nullified a crucial Chiefs first down, forcing a punt that allowed the Raiders to secure a 17–17 tie. The incident was so significant that the NFL subsequently altered its rules regarding how personal fouls were enforced during such plays.
The rivalry has been marked by dramatic swings in momentum and high-stakes games. In 1969, the underdog Chiefs defeated the Raiders in the AFL Championship Game before winning Super Bowl IV. Conversely, the 1980s saw the Raiders dominate the series while the Chiefs struggled. More recently, the rivalry has seen renewed intensity, such as in 2020 when the Raiders upset the undefeated Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, snapping a five-game losing streak. These moments, ranging from record-breaking crowd noise in 2013 to last-minute game-winning drives, continue to fuel the animosity between the two franchises.
