From Manhattan penthouses to the NBL: the meteoric rise of Cole Anthony
In short: Born in Portland and raised in a New York penthouse, Cole Anthony was a consensus five-star recruit and the premier point guard of the 2019 class. From dominating high school circuits to the NBA, his journey has been defined by high-stakes talent and unexpected transitions.
Cole Anthony's basketball pedigree was established early. The son of NBA veteran Greg Anthony, he grew up in Manhattan, where his parents emphasized hard work despite their wealth. After playing baseball in his youth, he focused on basketball in fifth grade, eventually becoming a standout at Archbishop Molloy High School and Oak Hill Academy. His high school career was marked by extraordinary feats, including becoming the first player in Oak Hill history to average a triple-double. He was a highly decorated prospect, earning MVP honours at the McDonald's All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit. Additionally, he helped lead the United States to a gold medal at the 2018 FIBA Under-18 Americas Championship.
His collegiate career at North Carolina began with immediate impact. In his debut against Notre Dame on November 6, 2019, he scored 34 points, setting a program record for a freshman debut. Despite facing injuries, including a partially torn meniscus in late 2019, he earned All-ACC honors. This performance paved the way for him to be selected 15th overall in the 2020 NBA draft by the Orlando Magic. His talent was recognised early when he was named the Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. He also achieved the distinction of being the first freshman in North Carolina history to score 20 points in his opening three games.
Anthony's professional career has been a whirlwind of movement and high-scoring moments. After a productive rookie season with the Magic, his path led through several teams. Following a trade to the Memphis Grizzlies in June 2025, he moved to the Milwaukee Bucks, then the Phoenix Suns, and eventually signed with Melbourne United in the Australian NBL in August 2026. His career has been characterized by high-scoring bursts, such as a 40-point game for Melbourne in October 2026. His professional journey included a stint with the Milwaukee Bucks after being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies. He also played for the Phoenix Suns following a three-team trade in early 2026.
