From a lonely childhood on a roof to the center of sports media controversy
In short: Colin Cowherd built a career on polarizing commentary and high-profile departures. From his early days as a local broadcaster to becoming a fixture of national sports radio, his path has been marked by both professional accolades and repeated public backlash over his remarks regarding athletes, tragedy, and cultural stereotypes.
Born in 1964 in Aberdeen, Washington, Cowherd spent his youth in the small fishing town of Grayland. Raised primarily by his mother following his parents' divorce, he often described himself as a solitary child who spent hours on his roof listening to baseball games. This early immersion in sports broadcasting eventually led him to a career that began as a play-by-play voice for the Las Vegas Stars and later as a sports director at KVBC, where he earned the title of Nevada's Sportscaster of the Year on five separate occasions.
Cowherd's national profile rose significantly after joining ESPN in 2003. He became a staple of the network, hosting programs like SportsNation and his long-running radio show, The Herd. However, his tenure was frequently punctuated by controversy. In 2007, he encouraged listeners to overwhelm a sports blog, causing it to crash for 96 hours, and he faced intense criticism for his comments on the deaths of figures like Sean Taylor and Eddie Guerrero. These incidents highlighted a recurring pattern of provocative commentary that often drew condemnation from the public and sports organizations alike.
The most significant turning point in his career occurred in July 2015, when he made disparaging remarks about the academic abilities of baseball players from the Dominican Republic. Although he was already scheduled to leave ESPN, the network cut ties with him immediately following the backlash. He subsequently joined Fox Sports, where he continued to host The Herd and expanded his reach into the podcasting space with the launch of The Volume in 2021. Despite health challenges, including a 2021 hospitalization for a blood clot, Cowherd remains a dominant, if divisive, voice in the sports media landscape, recently shifting his operations to Chicago.
