As an immortal member of the Universe's Elders, Taneleer Tivan belongs to the unique remaining group from the cosmos' initial race. Cygnus X-1 served as the location where he first gained consciousness billions of years in the past. While he often appears as an elderly human, his true form is that of a powerful alien capable of manipulating cosmic energy and changing his physical size at will.
His obsession with collecting began three billion years ago following a personal tragedy: his wife, Matani Tivan, relinquished her immortality and lost the will to live. To maintain his sanity in the face of eternal life, the Collector began gathering artifacts and creatures from across the universe. This hobby escalated into an all-consuming compulsion where he would seize anything rare or valuable, regardless of its origin or importance.
The Collector's motives are complex; at times, he acted as a self-appointed protector. Using his power of prophecy to foresee threats like Thanos, he built massive museums to keep life forms safe from destruction. However, his methods were often villainous, involving the enslavement of heroes like Thor and the Wasp, or using 'interdimensional traps' to weaken the sanity of his captives.
His arsenal is a testament to his vast knowledge of alien science and history. It includes everything from Earth's past—like catapults and magic beans—to high-tech starships, time probes, and even an Obedience Potion to compel humans to serve him. Despite his immense power, he remains a tragic figure defined by the vacuum of his own longevity.
